Alzheimer's Disease, Dementia Care and Memory Care

Memory care is a complicated condition with many names including Alzheimer's disease and dementia, but no matter what it is called, the diagnosis is life-changing. A decline in a person's mental ability affects their safety and daily living. It requires financial planning, legal planning, and finding care as the individual's abilities diminish.

Dementia is a general term for a reduction in mental ability to the point that it interferes with a person's daily life. Troubling behavior such as wandering, forgetfulness, agitation, paranoia, sleeplessness, repetitive speech, incontinence, and other challenges occur as the disease progresses.

Alzheimer's disease is a very specific form of dementia. More than 5.8 million Americans are living with Alzheimer's disease (named after German doctor Alois Alzheimer). They project that number to increase to 14 million by 2050 (source: The Alzheimer's Association estimates that between 60-80% of dementia diagnosis are related to Alzheimer's disease. offers this PDF for individuals to take with them when visiting a doctor to discuss their symptoms.

When the struggles of Alzheimer's disease, dementia or related illnesses are more than a patient's loved ones or other caregivers can address, Sunshine Memory Care steps in to help.

Individual Memory Care and Focus on Safety

Memory care for people with Alzheimer's disease or dementia is focused on helping the person concentrate on thoughts and actions to help them complete tasks. The focus is also on keeping those with dementia interested and engaged with the world around them. Reducing distractions, changes in routine, noise and establishing understanding is vital to improving the quality of the person's life. We help those with dementia thrive in a safe, comforting and friendly residence. Your mom or dad is in good hands here. Our trained and caring staff is devoted to the care of our residents while providing them with a sense of belonging and dignity. Much success in dementia care comes from patient and compassionate caregivers who understand that challenging behaviors are initiated by the disease — not the person — and can alter their behavior and circumstances rather than trying to get the person with dementia to change.

Safety aspects of dementia care come from managing the person's environment to reduce accidents, limiting access to certain things or areas, and being attentive and diligent caregivers. This is a place for mom to feel safe.

Medical Care

Medical care comes from the qualified administration of medications, maintaining a healthy diet, and specialized therapies to improve cognitive awareness and help patients maintain a sense of personal control. Health care needs are handled 24 hours a day by our team of certified caregivers, licensed nurses, and in-house registered nurse practitioners all of which are trained in memory care. We monitor and administer medications to ensure that each resident receives the help they need.

Engaging Community

Despite the challenges of memory impairment, a person with dementia can live an engaging, meaningful, and joyful life. Our team works hard to provide a safe, secure, and social environment in our specialized dementia care facility. SHFI's specialized memory care staff focuses on residents’ individual strengths, celebrating their successes, and finding ways to help them continue to feel that they are in control of their life. At Sunshine Memory Care, we develop daily activities that are meaningful for each resident. Keeping the mind and body active is an important part of a healthy lifestyle at any age. Exercise and fun group activities are provided for your loved one to enjoy. We have a daily exercise that each resident is encouraged to participate in, along with our fun group and individual activities throughout the day.
